This is the beginning. The beginning of a journey.
Gladius is a long term project with a huge initial scope. (that is certainly liable to change).
The player will take the role of an ordinary citizen in the Roman era with the ability to traverse a fully realised, top down 2D world, with trading, real-time combat and (hopefully) in-depth diplomacy.

Now if you have any sort of experience, the above should be a massive red flag. Massive scope? Fully realised world? In-depth, engaging diplomacy? This is surely a recipe for disaster and failed development.
However, the plan for Gladius is to create a modular game. To create many self contained games with small scopes that will join up to create a greater experience. That way, no matter when development ends they’ll always be a playable game somewhere in the mix.
It also means (if designed properly) development can be spread over a longer period of time, with feedback taking a much more direct role.
This style of development firmly places Gladius into the realms of a hobbyist project. We aren’t relying on this to pay for our next meal. This gives a certain amount of leeway regarding the direction we want to take things.
Is this possible to achieve? Well that’s what we’re here to find out.
